Carl RogersAbstract
In this interview with Rogers, he begins pointing out how, over time, he noticed more clearly how he used his own self in therapy, sharing his experience using his self and talks about some risks that he noticed. He relates his view on other topics related to this one: the therapist as a model, self-determination, transference, what would be appropriate goals for a therapist, and the importance of the therapist's maturity. He analyzes the main directions in his career as well as its evolution, from a traditional, academic therapist, developing a person centered therapy, and moving in the direction of a growing consciousness of the potential and spiritual dimension of the therapeutic relationship. He addresses the qualities of an authentic therapist, who, as a person, is at the same time confident and aware of their own limitations and what of what makes them vulnerable. He briefly comments on his points of view on the training of person centered therapists and ends by sharing about the impact that he believes this has had - or not - in the field of psychology, psychiatry, medicine, nursing and counseling.
