The experience of pain according to Byung-Chul Han in dialogue with the Catholic Church

The objective of this article is to present the thoughts of the South Korean philosopher Byung-Chul Han, in the work Palliative Society: pain today and to propose a dialogue with the narrative of the Catholic Church made during the covid-19 pandemic, more specifically, the striking image of Pope Francis alone in a completely empty St. Peter’s Square, due to social distancing, and presenting his speech during the extraordinary prayer for the end of the pandemic, on March 27, 2020, when the world was still ravaged by the scourge of pandemic and social isolation. The proposal is to offer an intersection of these two texts: the book by Byung-Chul Han, which highlights that social distancing was explored during the pandemic and kept us away from other people’s pain; and Pope Francis, who took advantage of the social distancing, the solitude before his faithful and the solitude before God, to pray in a completely empty square.
