Frankl’s intelectual trajectory and theory: on the shoulders of giants

The text presents three “versions” of Frankl (the biographical figure, the concentration camp survivor, and the thinker) and argues that understanding him requires situating him within his historical circumstances and intellectual influences. It summarizes his life, marked by profound loss and survival, highlighting his clinical work and commitment to meaning. It then outlines Logotherapy as a meaning-centered approach grounded in freedom of will (“freedom to”), responsibility, the will to meaning, and the meaning of life, discovered in relation to the world and to others. Finally, it identifies the “giants” who shaped his thought (Hippocrates, Freud, Adler, Scheler, Buber, Bühler, Jaspers, Cohen, among others), emphasizing community, dialogue, and practical action.
