Author Guidelines

Instructions to Authors

The submission of manuscripts to the journal implies the acceptance by the authors of the norms expressed in this document.

I – EDITORIAL POLICY

Phenomenology, Humanities and Sciences - Fenomenologia, Humanidades e Ciências aims to disseminate theoretical and review studies, as well as empirical research, in a multiprofessional and interdisciplinary perspective around the following themes: a) Phenomenology; b) Phenomenological Psychology; c) Philosophy of Existence; d) Humanistic and Existential Psychologies; e) Qualitative and Phenomenological Research in Health, Human, Social and Education Sciences.

II – GENERAL INFORMATION

Manuscripts will only be submitted electronically, to the Editorial Board for a technical review (at least two reviews per proposal, or more, when necessary). The journal's editorial staff will make use (if necessary) of invited experts - as ad hoc consultants - who may suggest modifications prior to the publication.
The journal provides open access to all its content, following the principle that free access for research generates greater global knowledge exchange.

All contents of Phenomenology, Humanities and Sciences - Fenomenologia, Humanidades e Ciências are licensed under a Creative Commons BY-NC, except where differently identified.

Articles should be original, related to psychology, philosophy, education, health sciences, social and anthropological sciences, and fall into the following categories:

Research report – investigation report concluded or in progress, using empirical data, methodology, results and data discussion.

Critical Literature Review - Comprehensive analysis of the scientific literature, with synthesis of results from original quantitative or qualitative studies, answering any specific and relevant question. Describes the research process of the original studies, the criteria used for selection and the procedure employed in the synthesis of the results obtained by the reviewed studies.

Theoretical Study – analysis of facts and ideas published on a specific theme. Looks for controversial findings for critique, and presents its own interpretation of the information.

Classical Text - translation of unpublished text (preferably in public domain or under express authorization) or republication of text connected to the topics covered in the journal. This category is the responsibility of the Editorial Board and may be suggested by other interested parties.

The Editorial Board or ad hoc consultants review the work, suggest modifications and recommend it to be published or not. This procedure can be repeated as many times as necessary. It is up to the Editorial Board to define the number of evaluations required for each article. The decision about the publication of a manuscript will always be made by the Editorial Committee, which will evaluate the original text, the suggestions indicated by the consultants and the modifications submitted by the author. In submitting the modified version of their manuscript, the authors should include a letter to the Editor, clarifying the changes made, those which they did not consider pertinent and its justification. Minor modifications may be made by the Editorial Board to enable the review and publication process. Authors will receive the decision of whether or not their text will be published together with its probable date of publication, if applicable. Rejected manuscripts may be resubmitted after substantial rewording as advised by the consultants and the Editorial Board, in which case they will be forwarded to the same consultants who reviewed the work previously.

Authorship
Authorship credit should be based on substantial contributions, such as (a) conception and design, (b) data analysis, interpretation and discussion of results, and (c) review and approval of the final version of the article.

The inclusion of names of authors whose contribution does not fit the above criteria is not justified.

Phenomenology, Humanities and Sciences - Fenomenologia, Humanidades e Ciências does not publish more than one (1) article by the same author (both in the position of lead author and coauthor) in the same issue. This procedure aims to increase the number of themes and collaborations coming from national and international authors.

Plagiarism
The Journal will verify submitted articles through the CrossCheck and
https://copyspider.com.br/main/ plagiarism detection tool after the peer review process.

Social Networks

In order to increase its dissemination, the jornal asks the authors to disseminate their articles published at the website at the social networks below, among others:

Academia.edu – https://www.academia.edu/

Mendeley – https://www.mendeley.com/

ResearchGate – http://www.researchgate.net/

Google Scholar – https://scholar.google.com.br/schhp?hl=pt-BR

Referees
The authors may indicate three referees for assessing the manuscript and their respective e-mails and institutional affiliations. Alternatively, the authors may indicate three referees that should not assess their manuscript.

III – MANUSCRIPT ASSESSMENT PROCESS

Manuscripts submitted for publication must be unpublished and exclusively for this journal. Their simultaneous presentation in another journal is not allowed. All papers will be submitted to a “blind” evaluation by - at least - two referees, specialist peers in the proposed theme.

The opinions expressed in the works, as well as the accuracy and adequacy of the References are the sole responsibility of the authors.

Publication of the papers will depend on compliance with the journal's rules and on the appreciation of the Editorial Board, which has full authority to decide on the appropriateness of their acceptance, and which may even make suggestions to the authors for the necessary changes.

When the research involves human subjects, the authors must present in the body of the paper a statement in which the written consent of the subjects (Informed Consent Form) and / or the institution where the work was performed (Research Ethics Committee) was obtained. Results of research involving vulnerable populations will only be published when followed by the Ethics Commitee’s statement on the respective research.

The authors will be notified regarding the acceptance or denial of their articles.
Independent of the decision, the originals will not be given back.

IV – EVALUATION PROCESS

First Appreciation

The originals will be accepted for evaluation as long as they have not been sent to any other journal or previously published (whether physical, as a chapter or book; or on-line), preserving the unpublished character of the article, and accompanied by the following items:

  • Main document (unidentified manuscript according to journal standards);
  • Supplementary document (submission letter, with full name and email of three possible referees for the manuscript));
  • Supplementary document (Identified Cover Page, according to journal standards).

The editorial process will only begin if the submitted manuscripts comply with the conditions of the Instructions. Otherwise, they will be returned for regulatory compliance, inclusion of a letter or other documents, even before they are submitted for review by the Editorial Board and for subsequent merit evaluation by the ad hoc reviewers.

DECISION PROCESS

The journal adopts the double blind review system, which ensures the anonymity of the authors and consultants during the evaluation process. The relevance of the theme will be considered, as well its originality, scientific consistency and compliance with ethical standards.

Attention: It is the authors' responsibility to ensure that there are no elements capable of identifying them anywhere in the text, which may make the peer review unfeasible and considerably extends the procedure.

The articles without the authors’ names will be sent to at least two ad hoc referees.

When changes are requested, the studies will be returned to the authors for the requested corrections based on the referees’ suggestions.

The corrections must be returned within 30 days (small reformulation) and 60 days (extensive reformulation).

The possible outcomes of the peer review process are: (a) approval; (b) request for manuscript reassessment after small reformulation; (c) recommendation for manuscript reassessment after extensive reformulation; (d) refusal. The author will always be informed of the outcome.

Two favorable referee opinions are required for publication. If the referees disagree, the article will be submitted to a third referee for new assessment. The editors always have the last word regarding the publication of the article. The Editorial Board of the journal may make small changes in the text according to the journal’s internal review criteria and norms.

Conflicts of interest

Authors: The authors must declare explicitly and individually any potential, direct and/or indirect, financial or nonfinancial conflict of interest.

Ad hoc referees: If any of the referees report a conflict of interest, the Editorial Board will send the manuscript to another ad hoc referee.

Publication in English

In case of approval, the articles will be published in English. For the manuscript to be published, the authors must provide their own English translation of the version approved by the Journal, being responsible by its possible costs of translation.

In order to guarantee the quality and uniformity of the translated manuscripts, the manuscript must be translated by a highly trained translator with proven experience in the translation of scientific texts, indicated and certified by the Journal.

If the manuscript needs reviewing by one of the translators indicated by the Journal, the authors must follow the formatting instructions provided by e-mail by the Journal. The authors are responsible for verifying the entire translation (body text, illustrations, tables, charts, etc.)

5.3. Parts of the Manuscript

  1. Identified Cover Page (This should be the only part of the text identifying the authors to ensure their anonymity). ATTENTION: The identified cover page must be sent in the system as a “supplementary document”, separated from the main text. The main text should start with the following item (unidentified cover page).
  2. Unidentified cover page: a) title in portuguese; b) title in english; c) title in spanish; d) indication of the category of the work (research report, theoretical or historical study or critical literature review).
  3. Abstract page: a) abstract in portuguese; b) keywords in portuguese; c) abstract in english; d) keywords in english; e) abstract in spanish; e) keywords in spanish. Abstracts should be between 120 and 200 words, in Times New Roman 10, single spaced, justified, without first line or offset. Keywords (descriptors) of three to five significant terms should refer to the fundamental content of the paper. The keywords or descriptors must be listed in the Health Sciences Terminology (DeCS) database.

5.4. Illustrations

All tables, figures, graphics, drawings, schemes, flowcharts, photographs, maps, organograms, diagrams, blueprints, charts, pictures, etc. are considered illustrations, and they should be used for illustrating the study data. Figures must not contain the same data as tables.

A manuscript may have no more than five (5) illustrations, regardless of type.

The illustrations must be editable. The following graphic design software and text editing programs are accepted: Excel, GraphPrism, SPSS 22, Corel Draw Suite X7, and Word. Therefore, images can be only submitted in the following file extensions: cdr, .pzf, .spv, .jpg, .jpeg, .xls, .xlsx, .doc, .docx, .vsdx, .vst. If a different software is used, use the standard font Frutiger size 7, which is the font used by the Journal during editing.

Images must have a minimum resolution of 600 dpi. Graphs and drawings must be generated in graphic design programs, such as Microsoft Excel, CorelDraw, Adobe Illustrator, etc., and accompanied by their quantitative parameters in a table. Include the names of all variables.

Color illustrations are recommendable at no extra cost to the authors.
Graphs must not have grid lines, and elements (bars, circles) must be two-dimensional (3D not accepted).

The author is responsible for the quality of the illustrations. Make sure it is possible to reduce the size of the illustrations to the widths of one or two columns (7 cm and 15 cm respectively) without loss of resolution. The landscape format is not accepted.

Each illustration must have a short title. Illustrations must be numbered consecutively and independently with Arabic numerals in the order in which they are mentioned in the text..

Graphs must contain the title of all axes and all columns of Tables and Charts must have headers.

The words Figure, Table, and Attachment in the text must be capitalized and accompanied by the respective number. Indicate in the text where the illustrations should be inserted. Keep titles concise.

Always include explanatory notes where necessary. If abbreviations and/or symbols (such as bold, asterisk, etc.) are used, indicate their meaning in the footnote of the illustration.

Manuscripts written in languages other than Portuguese should include accurate translation of the illustrations (tables, charts, and figures).

If illustrations published in other references are used, attach the document containing the authorization for their use and quote the source. In the case of photographs, it is necessary to send a statement with the authorization to use the image, even if there is an attempt to hide the identity of the photograph.

The authors must ensure that nothing in the manuscript infringes any copyrights or intellectual property of another, otherwise they may respond legally in accordance with the terms of Law n° 9.610/98, which consolidates copyright legislation.

5.5. Specifications of the Manuscript

Epigraph - when necessary, it may be presented, in normal font, with single spacing, Times New Roman 10 font, and right alignment. The name of the author of the title should appear in italics, followed by the reference of the work.

Nomenclatures and Abbreviations - use only the official ones. The use of abbreviations and names specific to the content of the manuscript should be made by indicating in brackets the first time they show up, preceded by its full form.

Footnotes - they should be consecutively enumerated in the order they appear in the text with overwritten arabic numerals. These should be restricted to the indispensable minimum. Do not put footnotes in the titles of the text.

Citations - should be made accordingly with the norms provided by APA (6th edition, 2010). In case of integral transcription of a text with an inferior number of forty words, the citation must be incorporated to the text inside double quotes, with indication, after the surname of author and the date, of the page(s) where it was taken from. A integral citation with forty or more words must be separated in an individual block, starting with a new line without quotation marks and without italics, with the indentation of the first paragraph aligned with the first line of the normal paragraph. The size of the font should be the Times New Roman 12 and the interlinear spacing should be 1,5 just as in the other parts of the text. The separated citation must be formatted in such a way that it leaves one line above and other below itself.

References - Denomination to be used. Do not use Bibliography. The references are to follow the norms of APA (6th Edition, 2012) by adopting the citation system author-date and are alphabetically listed in the reference column. The font is to be formatted in the size of 12, interlinear spacing of 1,5 and indentation of 1,25.

5.6. Common Types of in-text Citation

- Citations of multiple authors

  1. 1. a) two authors
All author’s surnames are spelled in all quotations using “and” or “&” according to the example: “The method proposed by Siqueland and Delucia (1969)” or “the method was initially proposed for the study of vision (Siqueland & Delucia, 1969)”.

    1. b) between three or five authors All authors' surnames are spelled out the first time the citation occurs according to the example: “Spielberger, Gorsuch, Siqueland, Delucia e Lushene (1994) verified that”.

From the second citation, include the surname of the first author followed by the expression “et al.” (Without italics and with a period after ‘al”). Omit the year of publication in the second citation in case of subsequent citations in the same paragraph.
If References and the abbreviated form produce the apparent identity of two works in which the coauthors differ, they are made explicit until ambiguity is eliminated.
In the References section, the names of all authors should be listed.

  1. c) Article with more than five authors

In this case, make the citation with only the first author's last name followed by “et al.” and the year of publication in the first and subsequent citations. In the References section, all names are listed.

-Citations of Authors with the same surname

If a list of references contains publications of two or more main authors with the same surname, indicate the initial of the first author in all quotes inside the text, even if the publication year is different.

-Citations of Works discussed in a secondary source

In case it is utilized as source a work which is discussed in another one, without the reading of the original text (for example, a study of Flavell, quoted by Shore, 1982), the following citation must follow: “Flavell (as cited in Shore, 1982) adds that those students…”

In the section References it should be informed only the secondary source (in this case Shore, 1982), with the appropriated format.

It is suggested to avoid to the greatest extent possible the use of secondary references.

-Citations of reprinted old works

  1. a) When the date of the work is either unknown or very old, cite the name of the author followed by ‘n.d”: “Piaget (n.d) showed that…” or (Piaget, n.d).

  1. b) In a work whose original date is unknown, but the date of the work which was read is known, cite the author’s name followed by “translation” or “version” and the date of translation or version: “According to Aristotle (translation 1931)” or (Aristotle, version 1931).

  1. c) When the original and consulted dates are different, but known, cite author, original date and consulted version date: “It was already shown by Pavlov (1904/1980)” or (Pavlov, 1904/1980).

References to classical works, such as the Bible and the Koran, whose sections are standardized in all editions are cited only on the text and not in the References section.

-Citations of Personal Communications

This type of citation must be avoided for not offering enough recoverable information by conventional means. If inevitable, it is to appear in the text, but not in the References section, by indicating “personal communication”, followed by day, month and year. Ex.: “C. M. Zannon (personal communication, october 30th, 1994).”

4.4. References Section

Broadly speaking, every entry in a list of references contains the following elements: author, year of publication, title and other important publication elements relevant in a bibliographical search. The authors are responsible by the informations in their list of references.

Thus, organize the list of references by alphabetical order of the surnames of the first author followed by the initials of his first names. Order word by word and remember that “nothing precedes something”: Brown, J. S, precede Browning, A. S., although the i precedes the j in the alphabet.

In cases of references to multiple studies from the same author, organize it by the publication date in chronological order, i.e. from the oldest study to the most recent one. References with the same first author but with different second and third authors must be organized alphabetically by the second and third authors (or third and fourth..). The examples below assist in organizing the text, but certainly do not exhaust the possibilities of citation. Use the Publication Manual of APA/American Psychological Association (2012, 6th edition) to supply possible gaps.

4.4.1. Examples of Common Types of Reference

- Article of scientific journal

Inform the name and volume of the journal in italics. Then, the number between brackets, above all when the pagination is restarted in every new issue.
